FIELDRECORDER SUPPORT
Help is one tap away.

Recording
How do I start a recording?
From the Library tab, tap the red microphone button. The recording screen opens — tap the big red button to begin. Audio is captured the moment the waveform starts moving.
What is MARK and when do I tap it?
MARK saves the current timestamp so you can jump back to that moment later. Tap MARK whenever you hear something important: a quote, an action item, a follow-up, an idea, or anything else worth finding fast.
You can also tap MARK from the lockscreen notification — no need to unlock the phone.
Can I record while the screen is off or another app is open?
Yes. FieldRecorder uses a foreground service so recording continues reliably with the screen off, the phone locked, or another app in the foreground. The active-recording notification on the lockscreen shows MARK and STOP buttons.
What audio format are recordings saved in?
AAC inside an .m4a container. You can pick the bit rate in Settings → Audio quality (64, 128, or 256 kbps). 128 kbps is the default and is plenty for voice.
Markers & timeline
How do I add a note to a marker?
While recording, tap a marker in the bottom list to attach a note inline. After recording, open the recording detail screen and tap any marker to edit its note or change its color category.
What do the marker colors mean?
Whatever you want them to mean. The defaults — amber, sage, slate, terracotta, plum, fog — are starting points. Use them for quote, action, follow-up, idea, highlight, source, or any other taxonomy that fits your work. You can rename categories in Settings.
How do I jump back to a marker?
Open the recording in the Library, scroll the markers list, and tap the marker. Playback seeks to that timestamp.
Export
Which export formats are supported?
Audio (.m4a) — the raw recording. Markdown — markers as a timestamped list, ready for Obsidian, Notion, or any notes app. CSV — markers as rows, for spreadsheets and data work. SRT — markers as subtitle cues, for video editors and transcription tools.
Where do exported files go?
FieldRecorder hands the file to your phone's standard share sheet. From there, send it to Mail, Drive, Files, AirDrop, your editor of choice — anywhere your phone can share files.
Privacy & data
Where are my recordings stored?
On your device. FieldRecorder does not sync to a cloud. Your audio, markers, and notes stay on your phone.
Does FieldRecorder track me?
No tracking, no ad IDs, no third-party advertising SDKs. There is one optional toggle for anonymous crash reports — it does not include audio or marker text.
How do I delete a recording?
Open the recording in the Library, tap the overflow ⋮ menu, and choose Delete. Audio file, markers, and waveform cache are all removed from the device. There is no cloud backup to restore from.
Troubleshooting
Recording stops when I switch to another app.
On Android, check that battery optimization is disabled for FieldRecorder: Settings → Apps → FieldRecorder → Battery → Unrestricted. Aggressive battery savers can kill background audio capture.
On iOS, make sure microphone access is granted: Settings → FieldRecorder → Microphone.
The waveform is flat / silent.
Likely a microphone permission or a hardware issue. Verify mic permission in system settings and try recording in another app to confirm the mic itself works. If it does and FieldRecorder still records silence, write to us with your device model.
Lockscreen MARK button is missing.
Notifications may be disabled or restricted. On Android: Settings → Apps → FieldRecorder → Notifications → ensure "Recording" channel is enabled. On iOS, lockscreen controls are limited by the OS — use the in-app MARK button instead.
Didn't find it? Write to us.
