How the handmade pricing formula works
Most makers price by doubling their materials. That quietly loses money, because it ignores your time and the fees the marketplace takes. The calculator above uses the formula that actually pays you:
- True cost = materials + (hours worked times your hourly rate) + overhead per item.
- Price before fees = true cost divided by (1 minus your target margin). A 50 percent margin is true cost times two.
- Final price = price before fees divided by (1 minus your fee rate). For about 10 percent in Etsy and payment fees, divide by 0.9.
The biggest mistake is leaving out labor. A piece that takes 40 minutes at $20 per hour carries about $13 of cost that a "materials times two" price ignores entirely. That gap is the money many makers lose on every sale.

Frequently asked questions
How do you price a handmade product?
Add materials, labor and overhead to get your true cost, divide by one minus your margin for the price before fees, then divide by one minus your marketplace fee rate. The calculator above does this for you.
Does this calculator include Etsy fees?
Yes. Pick Etsy from the marketplace list, or enter a custom rate, and the final price reflects what you keep after marketplace and payment fees.
What margin should handmade sellers use?
A 50 percent margin (doubling your true cost) is a common floor. Premium materials, custom work and strong branding support more. Always mark up the true cost, not just materials.
Is the calculator free?
Yes, free and in your browser with no signup. For saving your materials, fee presets, offline use at markets and exporting price sheets, CraftCost is free on iOS and Android.
